Olympiad & Team Central Give Back

We are truly blessed that we get to enjoy watching the children at Olympiad and Team Central build their confidence, be successful in their accomplishments, and have a great time in the gym.

We are also blessed to have a chance to give back and get involved in our community and helping support those who need our support.  There are so many ways in which we can help and we have a great asset in our own Olympiad, Team Central, and Spirit Elite family that we are able to help in various ways.  We feel it is important to help others all year round, that is why we support organizations such as Youth in Need, STL Prader-Willis Syndrom Association, Cor Jesu, and many more with their trivia nights, golf tournaments, and auctions.

The holidays are also an important time of year to assist others.  Each year, our gyms chose an organization they can assist throughout the holiday season.  Below is a list of organizations they have chosen for 2016.  If able, please consider assisting our staff as we support the following organizations this holiday season:

Thank you for helping get SB1025 Overridden

October 13, 2016

Dear Olympiad Customers,

We would like to extend our appreciation for your work on overriding the veto of SB 1025. Your letters, petition signing, and telephone calls helped our legislators understand that their vote in favor of the override was the right thing to do for the families of Missouri. Now that the bill has passed, you will see a change in the amount you are charged each month. Beginning with November charges, Olympiad Gymnastic Training Centers will no longer collect sales tax as part of your monthly fees. If you have any questions, please call your gym and speak to one of our customer service staff. They will be able to answer any questions you have regarding this matter.

Sincerely,

September is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month at Olympiad

Each April USA Gymnastics hosts a Child Abuse Prevention month, in an effort to grow awareness within our Olympiad/Team Central community, Olympiad & Team Central hosts a Child Abuse Prevention month in September in accordance with USA Gymnastics' April efforts.

What are we doing to prevent child abuse in our community?  Olympiad and Team Central have put several policies in place regarding our staff, instructors, and parents.  We have developed a Child Welfare binder that we keep at every Olympiad/Team Central location. The binders contain handouts, educational materials, reference guides, and action steps to assist our staff, instructors, and team coaches regarding Standards of Conduct, Child Abuse and Neglect information, and Procedures for Reporting Complaints and Violations.

Some of the Standards of Behavior that Olympiad/TC have adopted include, but are not limited to:
1) Avoiding being alone with a child
2) Establish Boundaries for Necessary Physical Contact,
3) Set Travel/Transportation Guidelines and
4) Prohibit Electronic, Social, and Out of Program interactions.

We're Speaking Out...Help Us, Help You!

Dear Olympiad Families,

As the owner of Olympiad Gymnastics, I would like to thank you for your patronage and support of Olympiad Gymnastics. Each one of you is an important part of our mission for the children of St. Louis; “Building Happy, Healthy, Confident Children”. Gymnastics teaches so many lessons beyond the physical; determination, respect for oneself and others, friendship, and teamwork are just a few skills that children practice in the gym and take with them when they move on to other dreams and challenges.

Olympiad Gymnastics is reaching out to our families for your help with an issue that affects us all. As you know, the State of Missouri decided to begin taxing instructional classes for children two years ago. Missouri is the only state in the nation that does so. We believe this is an unfair burden on the families that work hard to provide extracurricular activities for their children.

As a company that tries hard to do the right thing, we were forced to begin collecting sales tax on each class in our company in February of 2015 to stay compliant with Missouri state laws. For the time period that we have collected and passed through these sales tax monies, we have filed “Under Protest”, aligning with our belief that these additional taxes are unfair and harmful to the families of Missouri. During this time period, we have also worked with other gyms, our Representatives, and our Senators to overturn this ruling. After several other bills fell short of the mark, SB 1025 (a bill designed to exempt instructional classes from sales tax) passed unanimously in the Senate and near unanimously (134 – 7) in the House, before being vetoed by Governor Nixon, despite overwhelming support in the legislature.

SB 1025 will be back in the Missouri Legislature for an override vote on September 14, 2016, during the veto session. This is the only chance there is for this bill to be overridden. If it is not, the process will have to start from scratch in 2017, ensuring another year of unfair collection of sales tax on instructional classes.

Because this bill passed so overwhelmingly through the Legislature, we believe that there is a great chance the override vote will succeed. In order to be successful, a two thirds vote by both houses is required. If each Senator and Representative holds true to their original vote on the matter, the override vote will be a success - creating tax relief for Olympiad families and all Missouri families that participate in dance, gymnastics, martial arts, parkour/ninja, swimming, tennis, and other sports that require instruction.

This is where we would like to ask for your help. Beginning in the middle of August, we would like each Olympiad family to contact the Senator and Representative of the district their Olympiad Gymnastics gym is in, as well as the legislators in the district you live in, urging them to stay true to their original vote. We believe that if legislators hear from their constituents who are impacted by this sales tax ruling, they will hold to their original vote, which is all we need them to do to make the override vote a success.

Below, you will find a chart showing the Senators and Representatives for each gym, as well as a link that will take you to Open States, a website that enables you to type in your address and find out who your representatives are. On our website, you will find a sample script for the call, as well as links to the full text of the bill and other resources about this issue.

Beginning in August, each gym will have a form letter that you can fill out at the gym. We will collect these and mail them in batches to the appropriate representative.

Please join us in our efforts to encourage our elected officials to duplicate what they already have done – passed SB 1025 and lessened the tax burden on Missouri families.

Sincerely,
Ray Overmann
Owner, Olympiad Gymnastics

Olympiad Gymnast Places 2nd in USA Gymnastics Ninja Challenge

USA Gymnastics unveiled the USA Gymnastics Ninja Challenge this summer at three of its premier events.  st. Louis was one of the cities picked to host this new event. One June 24-26, gymnasts/ninjas from all over St. Louis were invited to attend the Ninja Challenge course.  This course gave children the opportunity to jump, hang, swing, run and perform other basic movements, utilizing all of the different body parts.

The Ninja Challenge had three age divisions: 6-7 year olds, 8-9 year olds and 10-11 year olds. The top gymnasts in each age division were recognized as the Ninja Challenge champions during the final day of competition in that city.

Our own Brianna B from Olympiad Chesterfield placed 2nd in the St. Louis City Finals as well as Cory S placing 4th, Ella M placing 9th, Ava Riegeosberger placing 7th, and Tucker E placing 9th overall. We were so proud of our athletes making gymnastics history with the first year of Ninja Challenge by USAG.

Summers coming, here are some cool and healthy treats for the kids...

Fruit Popsicles (prep time - 5-8 min to prepare, 5 hours to freeze)

Items needed:
Popsicle molds (you can find at Target or Walmart) or small plastic cups.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of strawberries (cored)
1/2 banana (peeled and cut into slices)
1/2 cup of raspberries
(feel free to use other types of fruit: kiwi, watermelon, peaches, blackberries)
1/2 cup of your favorite juice (low calorie orange or pineapple) or water

Directions:
Put ingredients into blender and blend well.
Pour into popsicle molds and put into freezer until frozen

When ready to serve, run mold under warm water and then pull out.

Watermelon Whole Fruit Popsicles
Source: www.NourishingMeals.com

Ingredients:
3 cups watermelon puree (about 1/4 to 1/2 a watermelon)
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
1/2 cup chopped fresh strawberries
1 kiwi, peeled and sliced
1 peach or nectarine, diced small
handful fresh cherries, pitted and chopped
You can replace the watermelon puree with honeydew melon or cantaloupe puree. Use any fresh organic fruit you have on hand. I like using contrasting colors because it makes the Popsicles look so pretty! And don't forget to use seedless watermelon.

Directions:
Cut the watermelon into chunks and then puree it in a blender until smooth. Set aside.

Set out about 1 dozen Popsicle molds (amount needed will vary depending on size of molds). Fill each one with the chopped fresh fruit. Then pour in the watermelon puree until each mold is full to the top. Place a Popsicle stick into each one. Place into your freezer and freeze for about 6 to 8 hours.

When ready to serve, run the Popsicle molds under warm water for a few seconds and then pull each one out. Enjoy!
